IMechE Nominations Committee - Ordinary Member

Are you interested in joining a committee performing a very important role for the Institution? Do you have time to contribute to, and work with, an active team whilst enhancing your own experience whilst continuing your current employment? Do you have interviewing skills or are you good at assessing people?

If so, this is the perfect opportunity to join one of our committees and help make a real difference to the way we are governed in a role that affords you the time to continue your career track in other areas.

About Us
With over 115,000 members in 140 countries, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) has been at the heart of the mechanical engineering profession since 1847.

We strive to improve the world through engineering by developing engineers, promoting engineering, informing opinion and encouraging innovation.

As a global Institution and registered charity, our operations are governed by committees. This role is to join our Nominations Committee (NomCo) which is responsible for developing and managing the recruitment, assessment, and nomination of suitable candidates to the Trustee Board, Council and Governance Board/Committees.

As a committee member, you will join the existing Nominations Committee for a three-year term. The committee meets frequently throughout the year (8-10 meetings), one of which will be at our London headquarters. All other meetings and committee work will be virtual.

The Role
Your role is vital in ensuring that our Institution is accessible, diverse, and progressive. You will help to create an environment where IMechE members who are eager to become more involved are welcomed and enabled to bring their expertise and thinking to the fore.

Specifically, the committee provides oversight to the corporate elections and will be responsible for creating a range of transparent and inclusive policies and procedures that promote fairness and objectivity in volunteer recruitment.

The committee will be pivotal in transforming our communications with members to promote volunteering opportunities amongst our global membership.

About You
To be considered for this volunteer role, you will ideally need a combination of the below:
1. Experience of recruitment at a senior level, corporate succession planning and talent pipeline management.
2. Experience of people management and development, skills analysis and evaluation.
3. Knowledge of governance principles and practices in professional engineering institutions in general and the IMechE in particular.
4. Experience of creating inclusive processes and supportive of the benefits of diversity.
5. Excellent communication skills with sound emotional intelligence which aligns to the Institution’s four I’s (Inclusion, Integrity, Innovation, Impact).

We are committed to diversity and inclusion at the IMechE and welcome applications from all sections of the community. The IMechE is an equal opportunities organisation and wishes to ensure that its volunteers are equally welcomed into an inclusive environment. Training and support will be offered to applicants who may not meet all the criteria but demonstrate competency in other areas.

It is important that members reflect the diversity of the Institution’s membership and employees. We are particularly interested to hear from underrepresented membership groups.

If you’re interested in applying for this position, please read the full role description and complete the online application form. Applications close 07 February 2022 17:00 GMT.

The Nominations Committee will keep all applicants updated throughout the process.

For further information, please contact the Nominations Committee (nominations@imeche.org).
